  Certain kinds of fungi give off toxic (mycotoxins) spores that can be inhaled and cause flu-like symptoms. Mycotoxins are readily absorbed by the intestinal lining, airways and skin. Focusing on the Stachbotrys chartarum fungus, a mold considered to be one of the more serious threats to people living and working in water-damaged buildings. 

MOLD

  All molds have the potential to cause health effects. Molds can produce allergens that can trigger allergic reactions or even asthma attacks in people allergic to mold. Pthers are known to produce potent toxins and /or irritants, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). A number of commonly found mold species are, in fact, toxic mold, a discription applied to any mold that produces mycotoxins in its spores. Stachybotrys (black mold), Aspergillus, and Penicillium are three of the most dangerous and commonly found indoor toxic molds. Mycotoxins are cytotoxic, meaning they have the capacity to pass through the human cellular wall and disrupt certain cellular processes - potentially causing serious health damage to workers and customers. Studies on animals and cell cultures in labs have found toxic effects from various microbial agents, raising concerns about whether these same agents growing in buildings can cause illness in people, according to the 2004 Mold Health Report from the Institute of Medicine (U.S. Government's National Acadamy of Sciences).   

MRSA “SuperBug”

What is MRSA?

  MRSA stands for methicillin resistant Staphlococcus aureus (S. aureus).  S. aureus is a type of bacteria that is found in the noses of about 1 in 3 people. It likes to live in warm moist areas, such as the nostrils, armpits and groin. Such people are said to be colonised by S aureus, and called "carriers". This means that the bacteria are living on the person, but not causing an infection. If the bacteria are able to enter the body, such as through a cut, this may result in infection. Most but not all infections caused by S. aureus can be treated with antibiotics.  



Salmonella

Salmonella bacteria are often found in eggs and on poultry and meats, but can come from other sources. People handling raw poultry and meats can easily contaminate their hands, cutting boards and utensils with Salmonella. Wash and sanitize all items that have been used with raw poultry and meats before using them for other foods. Foods that are not cooked, such as salads and cold sandwiches, can easily make people ill with Salmonella food poisoning.



Staphylococcus

This type of Staph infection can circulate rather quickly in common athletic areas such as gyms and fitness centers. This potentially harmful bacteria can be found on sports equipment, in locker rooms, and on personal hygiene care items such as towels, soaps, and razors. MRSA infections are contagiously spread by skin-to-skin contact through an open cut wound, or contact through personal hygiene care items.
